Maybe this is too simple, but have you thought of those upside down tomato gowers. I have 2 of them, 1 hanging over the other. I am not too fond of the green plastic with fakey vine graphics but it sure would beat the pole. By mid June I had to tie up the lower container with recycled pantyhose to keep the tomatos from hanging to the ground. I get a little tickle when I get to take a nice beefy red one to my still waiting family members with (real) back yard gardens.

Jim,

Maybe this is a silly question, but annual vines are equally fine growing up or down poles, right? I was thinking about moonvines and morning glories. I suppose it to too late to start them now?

Since you can't put planters at the base how about growing vines from a basket or two at the top and training them *down* around the pole? Annuals will give you cover fastest, but then you're left with bare pole in winter -- at which point maybe it's time to break out the good ol' holiday lights?

Cheers,

That's one ugly pole. Maybe you could place two semi-circular planters at the bottom, run lattice work out of them and tie that to the pipe. Then grow ivy or tomatoes...so they can grow up the lattice work. Another idea, might be to secure other L-brackets all the way up the pipe, and hang bird baths/feeders and other hanging baskets off of the pipe.
