Use CB2’s maze to create a simple green wall

We love the cover of the new CB2 catalog. Since when are guys shown gardening on the cover of a national catalog? Isn’t it cool how they use this metal maze wall hanging thing as a way to create a simple green wall effect, using air plants and succulents. We like the CB2 Julep rocker in this photo too.

There’s a step by guide on how to make this green wall on the CB2 site.

How To Make a Green Wall Using Succulents

We’re considering adding a green wall to the blank backwall of our roof garden. We found these step-by-step succulent wall instructions over at Sunset Magazine’s excellent gardening section.

The article also links to the amazing Succulent Gardens. What an inspiring store! Now the trick will be to translate all of this sunny California gardening advice for our Brooklyn roof garden.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden Plant Sale — Coming in May!

We’re looking forward to loading up our roof garden with plants from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden plant sale on May 5 and 6. Last summer we hauled in plants from all over Brooklyn and Manhattan . . .  but the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is only a few blocks from our apartment so this will be great. In the Garden on LoHud.com has all the details. This will be our first sale, so R* and I are really looking forward to it.

“Dedicated to helping local urbanites improve their gardens while making the city greener, the two-day Plant Sale offers both indoor and outdoor plants, including a vast selection of perennials, shrubs, trees, and vines; herbs and vegetables, including heirloom varieties; exotic tropicals; native plants; hanging baskets; orchids; “collector’s corners” of rare and unusual annuals; and much more.”

Brooklyn Botanic Garden members are invited to a Members-Only Preview Sale will be held on Tuesday, May 4, from 4:30 to 8 p.m.

The Vertical Garden

The Vertical Garden ($30 + shipping) creates nine planting areas, stacked on three levels. We found it at the Philadelphia Flower Show and liked how the triple stack of pots is water and space efficient. R* and I are interested in hearing what you think about the “taste level” of this Vertical Garden. The Vertical Garden also includes a hanging chain.

We bought one to test, but it seems a little cheap looking to us and it doesn’t seem to show off the plants very well. The Stack and Grow planter from the old Smith & Hawken certainly was more classy looking.

Small Space Garden Inspiration from the Philadelphia Flower Show

A few weeks ago, we snuck away to Philadelphia for the day to visit the Philadelphia Flower Show. The show was stunning, but honestly we were hoping for more inspiration and ideas for urban small space gardeners. This stand from the Mid Atlantic Horticultural Therapy Network stood out to us. They suggested looking for discarded stairs and turning them into a vertical garden with room for multiple window boxes.

Stoop Sighting: First Flowers on Park Place

Today is the first day of spring!

We don’t know the name of this plant (do you?), but we love how this bush brightens this Brooklyn brownstone stoop.

Gaze at a Brooklyn Green Roof

We’re wrapping it up on our roof garden. R* took the umbrella down last weekend; think he put it under the bed. This weekend, we’re going to cover the rose bushes, pull the annual herbs, and stack up the chairs. So long to our first summer of gardening.

This winter, we’re planning to stay energized with photos, gardening books, and professional gardeners’ portfolios. First up: this stunning green roof garden in Brooklyn created by Timothy, The Organic Gardener.

How did your roof garden grow this year? What’s inspiring you as the cold weather rolls in?
